When Amazon's e-book Kindle device was unveiled in 2007 it was hailed as a new dawn for publishing and a death knell for the printed book.
But it seems the idea of the e-reader may not be as revolutionary as first thought - the technology was first designed in 1935.
It won't slip into your pocket, but a drawing from a science magazine published almost 80 years ago under the caption 'the book reader of the future', shows a design for a remarkably similar - although armchair based - device.
The invention, from the April 1935 edition of 'Everyday science and mechanics' show a device with a glass screen and buttons to turn pages
It shows a man sitting in an armchair reading a book on a glass screen that has been enlarged via a projector.
The man, who appears dapperly dressed, is able to turn pages with a remote control and even adjust a focus with a lever.
The drawing carries the explanatory labels: 'miniature film carries photographs of book pages', 'page reproduced (enlarged)', 'ground glass screen', 'button turns leaf', 'adjusting focus' and 'swing screen to proper angle.'
It is not known whether the device was ever developed.
The design was carried in the magazine, 'Everyday science and mechanics' in its April 1935 edition.
The first generation Kindle was released in America in November 2007 to a fanfare of publicity and sold out in five and half hours.
It has since grown, spawning numerous imitation devices and last year helped ebooks outsell printed books for the first time in the UK.
Modern ebook readers use a low power 'e-ink' display that can be read in sunlight, although Amazon also makes its Kindle software available for mobile phones and tablets.

Rupert Banner, a car specialist at auctioneers Bonhams, said: 'Electric cars are all the rage now but Detroit Electric was doing very well with them 100 years ago.
'The company became the most successful manufacturer of electric cars and this is a very early version of what they produced.
'They were very popular into the 1920s.
'This one still has the same interior it had back then and has been well preserved.
'It's like stepping back in time.
'It has been in a museum for a number of years now.
Experts at Bonhams say the car is relatively easy to restore, and could soon be in full working order
'It's a very interesting car and it still has its original transforming unit with it, which is extremely rare.
'It looks like something you could power an entire grid with these days, it is so big.
'Once the petrol car came in the days of the Detroit Electric Model were always going to be numbered.
'People could go longer distances and there were now no limitations, which especially in a country as big as America, made all of the difference.

The car will be sold at auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, US, on January 17.
